Marine engineering is a professional course in the engineering field that prepares suitable personels for the interesting life on the sea. Schools in nigeria that train maritime workers and professionals must be well equipped with the necessary tools and facilities required for the task. Marine engineering involves all kind of offshore related jobs as well as ship building and lots more.
However, there are very few universities in nigeria that offer marine engineering as an undergraduate course (B.eng or B.tech).

The Federal University of petroleum resources [FUPRE] was established in 2010. It is located in the outskirts of the popular city of warri in Delta state which is a major part of the Niger Delta region.
The university was started with the aim of training proffesionals in the oil and gas industry of which Marine Engineering is a big role player.
They have four engineering departments alongside the department of Marine engineering and Naval architecture. FUPRE is currently the only federal University (aside the newly established NMU) offering B.eng/B.tech in Marine engineering.
The River’s state University of science and technology is located at Nkpolu Oroworukwo in the rich city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State Nigeria.
It remains one of the, or perhaps the oldest institution that dishes out a Bachelors degree in Marine Engineering in Nigeria. Click here to view the university’s faculty of engineering.
The Nigerian_Maritime_University (NMU) is located at Okerenkoko with its takeoff campus at Kurutie Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
It was established in 2017 by the Federal Government of Nigeria, and has been granted approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence undergraduate degree programmes.
As the name implies, the Marine Engineering department is the major foundation on which the school is built and one of its purpose is to promote marine engineering in Nigeria
The Niger Delta University [NDU] was Established in 2000. It is a Bayelsa State Government funded university which is located in Wilberforce Island (an island of great historic significance) about 30 kilometers from Yenagoa – Bayelsa State capital.

The Akwa Ibom State University is located in southern city of Akwa Ibom. It is a conventional, multi-campus institution.
The main campus is located at Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It adjoins the confluence of Ikot Akpaden – Eastern Obolo road and Eket – Ikot Abasi highway. The next campus is located at Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, along Abak – Ikot Okoro Road.
The department of Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture was one of the pioneering Departments that made up the erstwhile faculty of Oceanography Naval Architecture of the then Akwa Ibom State University of technology AKUTECH. Click here to view the university’s faculty of engineering.
NOTE that there are also polytechnics and institutions that offer marine engineering in nigeria but not with a bachelor’s degree. Even the great Nigerian maritime academy Oron gives at most, an HND degree in marine engineering.
